the quick fix

I was watching Brothers & Sisters tonight (honestly a horrible show with very worldly values - I have no idea why I watch it - there is no redeeming quality to it at all but for some reason I like the characters. I can relate to Kitty who is the only republican in the family.)

Anyway, I was watching it and started to think - in the hour show here is what happened:
Kitty collapses, was rushed to the hospital, found out she had a blood clot, was on blood thinners, family finds out that the doctor had told her the cancer tumor has spread while on chemo, obviously chemo is not work, decides to go with a different course of treatment, search and find a donor for a bone marrow transplant, renew their vows, has the transplant and finally it is determined she is in remission and going to live to have a long life. ALL IN A HOUR!

Americans like their shows all neatly wrapped up with a happy ending in a hour! Is it any wonder that Americans are unwilling to do what is needed to fix the huge debt we are running up? It would take a long time - couldn't be wrapped up in a hour. It would take sacrifice and cutting back. Americans want the easy road, the instant gratification road. We want our cancers treated and solved in a hour! Is it any wonder that we are in the mess we are in right now! Sometimes the right road involves skipping the quick fix and actually taking the time and energy to do it right. It takes time, sacrifice and lots of work. Americans used to know how to roll up their shirt sleeves and get the job done. Now we want the quick fix - even if it means the fix won't hold - it is like putting duct tape over the hole in the Titanic. Do we really think that will hold? Certainly it is easy and can be done in a hour - but will it hold? Will it last? Will America last?

It is so true that we think we can just put duct tape over things and hope they will work. My dad and I were discussing some of this yesterday as even to the no money in the Social Security for the baby boomers now that was set aside, as the govt used it. :(

And our government keeps spending more and more! One day we will have to pay the piper!
